What is health insurance ?
Insurance taken out to cover the cost of medical care or put differently coverage that provides for the payment of benefits as a result of sickness or injury. Each health insurance coverage has different benefits and it is not always easy to compare insurances with each other. Also the rule of thumb that more expensive coverage have the richest benefits does not always apply. It is nevertheless essential to do a good comparison so that you have the best possible solution for your needs!

Most insurance plans have a selection of benefits. Make sure your plan meets your current and future needs.
Some essentials to watch out for and compare:
Inpatient cover
Outpatient cover
Dental cover
Maternity and newborn care
Assistance services (evacuations etc.)
When you compare insurance plans of one insurer or you compare the plans between insurers, make sure you are comparing apples with apples. It is very easy to get confused so try to determine which benefits are most important for you and compare those first. If you need help call the insurance company or an independent insurance broker for support.
Insurance products are often clustered in coverage levels. Normally the rule applies that the higher the level the richer the benefits and the higher the limits on individual benefits are. Often the insurance plans have easy to understand names indicating the various levels:
Bronze
Silver
Gold
When you have selected the plan with the essential benefits meeting your needs you can often influence the premium by selecting following options:
Co-pays (out of the pocket expense per invoice)
Deductibles (fixed amount of out of pocket expense)
When checking out make sure that your selected plan meets your needs and do a final validation by considering
1 Does your plan has the right benefits for your personal healthcare needs
2 Does your plan have sufficient coverage levels limiting your potential out of pocket expenses
3 Does your plan cover you in the right location depending on your personal mobility (locally, during travels, internationally)
If you are satisfied with your plan you can check out. Most insurers offer various payment methods you need to opt for:
Frequency: monthly, quarterly, yearly (sometimes there are discounts for yearly payments)
Means: credit card, wire transfer, standing order, direct debit (e.g. SEPA mandate in EU)

Claim process, how does it work ?
How you can get indemnification from your insurer may vary. Typically there is a difference between so called direct billing or reimbursement.
Cashless: for more expensive treatments you can normally contact your insurer prior to treatment and ask them to place a Guarantee of Payment with the health care provider that will treat you.
Reimbursement: typically for less expensive (e.g. outpatient) treatments the patient pays directly to the provider and claims back the money with his health insurer.
